Just read in the March issue of Lucky of a store in New York City called "I Heart" !!! Vintage items, indie designer clothes, cds, jewelry, emerging artists' works. Neat!

Mamma's Girl

A list of the crap we've done for Mom:

  • Called weekly (okay, daily)
  • Kept mini fire extinguisher under kitchen sink
  • Carried laminated "in case of emergency, please call" card in wallet
  • Stopped dating questionable biker guy (still mad at her for it)

Donatella Arpaia (of David Burke and Donatella fame) has just one-upped us all by creating a new restaurant to honor the food her mom raised her on. Ama, which opens tonight, is a welcome addition to the bleak landscape of Italian food in SoHo.

The small but bustling spot features the cuisine of Puglia, the region in the heel of the boot, where Mamma Arpaia was born. Chef Turibio Girardi prepares local favorites like panzerotti (fried calzone), raviolini in capon broth, and capuntini (homemade pasta with fresh tomato sauce, eggplant, and ricotta). Main courses are heavy on seafood, rabbit, sweetbreads, and pancetta-stuffed quail.

The best dessert is the almond cookies. No surprise there. They're grandma's recipe.

And so we add yet another item to the list:

  • Eat a proper dinner.

Ama, 48 Macdougal Street, between Houston and Prince Streets (212-358-1707).

01:10 pm - the gates at central park...
has anyone keep up with the news from central park? it's all about the gates...

In February 2005, New York City and Central Park will be host to an extraordinary work of art. On February 12 (weather permitting), celebrated artists, Christo and Jeanne-Claude will unfurl the fabric panels for THE GATES, CENTRAL PARK, NEW YORK CITY, 1979-2005. On view for only 16 days, the 7,500 gates will transform Central Park by following the edges of 23 miles of walkways and footpaths from 59 th street to 110 th street. Saffron-colored fabric panels will hang seven feet above the ground, blowing in the wind and delighting the public walking beneath with a warm glow of translucent color. The gates will seem like a golden river appearing and disappearing through the bare branches of the trees. The exhibit is free for all New Yorkers and visitors to enjoy and will not interfere with normal Park activity.
